CE Commissioner demands from Russia to investigate attack on "Memorial" in Dagestan

After threats against the Dagestani office of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", Nils Muižnieks, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, has urged the Russian authorities to end the harassment of rights defenders in Northern Caucasus.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 22, in Makhachkala, a car of the HRC "Memorial" office was set on fire. On January 23, members of the HRC office in Dagestan got SMS-messages and a phone call with a demand to stop their activities. The rights defenders filed a complaint to the police.

"Another attack against HRC 'Memorial' occurred, this time in Dagestan. The harassment of human rights defenders in the North Caucasus is reaching a dramatic level," wrote Nils Muižnieks in his Twitter on January 23.

"The authorities of the Russian Federation must invest more efforts to stop it urgently," Nils Muižnieks added.
