Ali Bakaev arrested in Borispol for 40 days

A Ukrainian court has ruled to arrest Ali Bakaev, a native of Chechnya, suspected in Russia of organizing an attack on a "Rosgvardia" (Russian National Guard) unit.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 31, Ali Bakaev was detained by Ukrainian border guards at the Kiev Borispol Airport. Russian law enforcers have accused Ali Bakaev of organizing an attack on the "Rosgvardia" unit in the district centre of Naurskaya. Law enforcers claimed that Bakaev had been put on the international wanted list through the Interpol. On June 12, 2017, Bakaev's appeal appeared on the Internet, in which he stated that he was not involved in the attack.

A checkpoint of the National Guard of Russia in the Cossack village of Naurskaya was attacked at night on March 24, 2017. During the attack, six fighters of the National Guard were killed and three others were injured. Besides, six attackers were killed.

According to Stanislav Krasnik, an advocate of the human rights organization "Right to Defence", who represents Bakaev's interests, the decision to arrest his client was made by the Borispol court of the Kiev region. The advocate has added that Bakaev was placed into a SIZO (pre-trial prison).

"They awarded him with 40 days; I've lodged an appeal, but the first session did not take place – the prosecutor failed to appear," the "Kavkaz.Realii" quotes Mr Krasnik as saying today. According to the edition, so far, Bakaev had no chance to apply to the State Migration Service (SMS) of Ukraine for granting asylum.
