Tbilisi metro drivers stop their strike

The decision to stop the protest action was made today after the night talks with officials of the Tbilisi Mayoralty.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 4, Tbilisi metro drivers announced a strike and demanded to raise their salaries; and all the metro stations in Tbilisi were closed. Two rounds of talks held by Kakha Kaladze, the Tbilisi Mayor, held with the strikers at night on June 5, gave no fruit.

Tbilisi metro drivers demand from the administration of the "Tbilisi Transport Company" to increase the pay from 7 laris (about 2.8 US dollars) to 10 laris (about 4 US dollars) per hour.

The strikers finally decided, as a result of their internal consultations and after the talks with Mayoralty officials, to resume work. According to the strikers, Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor, took responsibility for raising their wages. However, it is still unknown when this will happen, the "Rustavi-2" TV Channel reports.

The talks on when and how much the wages of metro workers are to be raised will begin in the near future, said Rati Kapanadze, the head of the independent trade union of metro drivers "Ertoba-2013".

"The agreement has been reached; the metro will resumed its work at 2:00 p.m.," Mr Kapanadze said today after a meeting with officials held last night at the Mayoralty.
