No compensations for lost homes

Residents of Komsomolskoye, Urus-Martan district, which was completely destroyed during military action have been given no compensations for their lost homes and properties to date.

This is what a village resident says. According to Ramzan Suleimanov, 44, only international humanitarian organisations provide assistance to residents in the destroyed village.

"Our village was completely destroyed in March 2000 when combats between the military and the unit of Khamzat Gelayev were going on here for nearly a month. A lot of our fellow villagers were killed here that time because no corridor to leave the encircled village was provided," he says. "After a month of combats, the entire village turned into ruins. And people have not been able to return to their homes for five years already."

"We have not received compensations. Those who can rebuild their houses at their own expense, but they are a few. The Danish Refugee Council has helped us a lot. They have installed panel houses and a school here. But problems remain all the same. There is no water, electricity, and heat in the village. Besides, the school admits only 100 pupils, but they are several times more in number here. Yet, people hope that the government will finally pay attention to our problems," said the interlocutor.
