Residents of Chechnya complain about forced winter subbotniks

Employees of budgetary institutions in the Grozny District of Chechnya are forced to work on cleaning the banks of the Terek River after their work hours and on weekends, local residents have complained.

The participation in garbage collection, organized by the authorities, is strictly mandatory. Those who disagree are offered to write a resignation application; therefore, people agree to go to cleaning, because it is very difficult to find a new job, people told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Residents of Chechnya are regularly reporting about their participation in subbotniks (community unpaid work). In September and October, when authorities were preparing to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Grozny, forced subbotniks were held more often.

Earlier, subbotniks were not held in winter, Supyan, a local resident, has noted.

"It is outraging that we have to work now also in winter. The weather is cold; it's dirty, but we have to clean the banks of the river and collect all the garbage that has accumulated here for months," said the man.

The local administration has admitted that subbotniks with the participation of civil servants are held at the order of the district leadership.
