Female activists state inefficient fight against sexual violence in Georgia

Law enforcers would not investigate cases of sexual violence, while the Georgian legislation fails to comply with international standards, women-picketers have stated in Tbilisi.

Members of the "Women's Movement" and Tbilisi residents, who supported them, gathered for an action on the International Women's Day. They emphasized that cases of sexual violence are rather rarely investigated, or law enforcers demand too much evidence from victims of violence, the "Sova.news" reports.

The participants in the action were also against sexual harassment. "We demand to put an end to sexual harassment and violence everywhere, including in the workplace," the "Rustavi-2" TV Company quotes one of the protesters as saying.

Activists also mentioned the pension policy in Georgia: in their opinion, it discriminates women.

In December 2018, the NGO "Georgia's Democratic Initiative" raised the issue of the women's vulnerability in Georgian villages. Women from ethnic and religious minorities are not aware of their rights, and about where to turn in order to defend them, the NGO said, noting also the problem of domestic violence.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
