Two Georgian residents detained for bride kidnapping

A resident of Georgia and his alleged accomplice are suspected of kidnapping a 19-year-old girl in the south of the country, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia reports.

According to the police, the girl was kidnapped in the village of Tazakendi near the border with Azerbaijan. The men forced her into their car. However, the girl managed to escape along the way.

A court pronounced a decision to detain two suspects: 28- and 29-year-old men. Policemen found them in Tbilisi, the "News-Georgia" reports with reference to the Georgian MIA. The detainees face up to 10 years of imprisonment, the "Sputnik-Georgia" reports.

The tradition of bride kidnapping brides is particularly spread in Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia. In February, a resident of Stavropol was put on the wanted list, who, according to investigators, kidnapped a 16-year-old girl with the aim of marriage.

The main reason for the bride kidnapping in the Caucasus is not the prohibition of marriage by parents, but economic difficulties: relatives of a girl and a guy can agree on a kidnapping in order to save money to be spent on wedding party ceremonies. However, bride kidnapping often occurs without consent of a girl.
