PFPA treats arrest of its activist in Azerbaijan as political
On December 22, Kenan Azizli, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was arrested for ten days on charges of disobedience to the police. The PFPA believes that he is prosecuted on the basis of trumped-up charges for political reasons.
Kenan Azizli, a member of the PFPA's youth committee and the Sumgait city organization, was detained on December 21 in the city of Sumgait, Gezyal Bairamly, the PFPA's deputy chair, has stated.
"It's notable that arrests are usually conducted on the eve and during our rallies. But this time, we haven't planned any actions. Apparently, they've now decided to conduct arrests for prophylactics," Ms Bairamly has added.
In her opinion, the young man is prosecuted for his active political behaviour, participation in protests and critical posts against the authorities placed in social networks.
Namizad Safarov, the coordinator of the Committee against Repressions and Torture, has noted that depriving an activist of the opportunity to contact his relatives and invite an advocate of his choice are violations of his rights guaranteed by the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR).
