Feminist actions draw authorities' attention to domestic violence problem in Caucasus

The problem of domestic violence remains relevant in Southern Caucasus and in the regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD). However, in Northern Caucasus, feminists do not go out to street protests, like activists in Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 8, in Baku, participants of a feminist march drew the authorities' attention to the problem of domestic violence in the country. One of the protesters was harassed and tried to commit suicide.

On March 8, in Tbilisi, female activists arranged a performance to draw the authorities' attention to the problem of violence against women in Georgia. The activists protested against violence used against women, the UN Association of Georgia reports on its website.

On Facebook, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakhariya reported that during two months, eight women died as a result of domestic violence in the country.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili called domestic violence one of the most common crimes in the country.

In Dagestan, local feminists do not have any leaders able to organize street rallies, Svetlana Anokhina notes.

According to Asya Dzagurti, a volunteer of the movement "Khotæ" combating violence, the problem of domestic violence is also urgent in North Ossetia.

In Northern Caucasus, most women are left alone with the problem of domestic violence, and the situation is even aggravated by strict observance of religious dogmas, says Saida Sirazhutdinova, the president of the Centre for Global Studies of Present and Regional Problems "Caucasus. World. Development".
