Azerbaijani activist complains of torture

Fuad Ismailov, a former member of an election commission in Azerbaijan, arrested on charges of drug use, has complained of beating up by law enforcers. He said in court that he'd go on a hunger strike against his fabricated case.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 9, Fuad Ismailov was arrested administratively on charges of possessing narcotic drugs.

Fuad Ismailov became known in Azerbaijan after he, while being a member of an election commission with an advisory vote in the Surakhani Constituency, posted a video of election violations.

On March 13, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) considered Fuad Ismailov's complaint about his arrest. Ismailov denied the charges against him, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, who was present at the court session, has reported.

"After the detention, they brought me into a room; and there they allegedly pulled marijuana out of my trousers pocket, and filmed that on video. They had put this pack into my pocket themselves," Mr Ismailov has stated.

According to history, he was beaten. "The beatings were continued at the drug addiction examination, where they took me. They beat me even worse on my return from there ... Some 20 persons attacked me. My ear was injured; and my teeth were knocked out," Ismailov said.

He has added that since March 7, he has been on a hunger strike in protest against his fabricated arrest.
