Nagorno-Karabakh MPs demand president's resignation

The political leadership failed to ensure people's safety during hostilities; and the ceasefire agreement has questioned the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh; therefore, Araik Arutyunyan must step down as president, the four factions of parliamentary parties have stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the agreement of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia on the cessation of the hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh came into force on November 10. In particular, it provides for the deployment of Russian peacekeepers in the Karabakh conflict zone.

The demand for Arutyunyan's resignation was signed by MPs of the parties, which have 17 mandates in the parliament, namely, the "Democratic Party of Artsakh", the "Armenian Revolutionary Federation", the "Justice Party of Artsakh" and the "United Motherland".

There are 33 MPs in the parliament of Nagorno-Karabakh.

"Unfortunately, the current political authorities of Artsakh and Armenia, which bear the main responsibility for ensuring security, protection of our people in a crisis situation, have not been able to fully use their political and diplomatic opportunities that could reduce or prevent the impending catastrophe," says the MPs' statement translated from Armenian into Russian by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The authors of the statement believe that the provisions of the latest tripartite agreement "are seriously threatening the principles of state independence and territorial integrity of the Artsakh Republic." The statement has voiced out the demand for the resignation of the President of Nagorno-Karabakh. The authors have also expressed support for 17 parties in Armenia, which demanded on November 9 the resignation of Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, and his government.
