About 700 people await opening of border between Russia and Azerbaijan

About 300 Russian citizens stay in Azerbaijan and await to be sent home, while about 400 citizens of Azerbaijan stay in Dagestan, the authorities of the republic report.

On November 24, Garun Davydov, First Deputy Minister for National Policy and Religious Affairs of Dagestan, reported that Azerbaijan did not intend to open the border with Russia until December 4. About 1000 Russian citizens who stay in Azerbaijan cannot enter their homeland, and the passage of residents of Azerbaijan across the border has also been suspended.

A temporary accommodation centre (TAC) was arranged near the Dagestani village of Kullar for the citizens of Azerbaijan who failed to return home because of the borders closed due to the coronavirus epidemic. Residents of the camp and newly arrived Azerbaijanis were being sent home in groups every week on Tuesdays. However, after the escalation of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, only one group was sent home on October 20. In total, Dagestan had registered 1200 Azerbaijani citizens who wished to return to their homeland, the headquarters under the Azerbaijani government reported on November 2.

On the Azerbaijani side, no more than 300 people waited for the opening of the border, reported Garun Davydov, who stayed near the border checkpoint in Dagestan.
