ECtHR awards compensation to Chechen resident under complaint about torture

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has recognized a complaint filed by Roman Gastemirov, a resident of Chechnya, about torture by the police in 2005 as justified and awarded him 50,000 euros in compensation.

In 2010, a complaint from Roman Gastemirov, a resident of Grozny, who did not succeed in seeking the institution in Russia of a criminal case on torture in the police, was sent to the ECtHR.

According to the Interregional Public Organisation "Committee Against Torture" (CAT), on August 10, 2005, Roman Gastemirov was taken to a police station in Grozny, where he was beaten and tortured with electric current, while policemen offered him to incriminate himself in a case on transporting weapons and aiding and abetting militants.
