Political motives named as defining factor in Djumaev's case

The verdict to Said-Mukhammad Djumaev, a native of Chechnya, who was arrested after a fight with law enforcers at a rally in Moscow, depends on political circumstances, but now he should not expect any leniency, Timofei Shirokov, a lawyer, believes. Close attention to Djumaev's case can bring both pros and cons in sentencing, said Svetlana Gannushkina, the chair of the "Civil Assistance" Committee.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the court will consider the appeal against Djumaev's arrest on February 15.

The resonance around the story with Djumaev has been caused by the fact that he became the first Chechen in many years to take the side of the opposition, Musa Lomaev, a blogger, and Oyub Titiev, a human rights defender, believe.

Timofei Shirokov, a lawyer, believes that the delay in the inquiry into Djumaev's case is possible; and it won't be for his benefit. According to the lawyer, changes should be expected if, for some reason, "Djumaev turns from a villain, for example, into a victim."

Svetlana Gannushkina believes that Chechen authorities, who had condemned Djumaev's act, want to demonstrate their great potentials, as well as to show "their constant loyalty" to Moscow. At the same time, Moscow may not like the desire of Chechen leaders to favourably show themselves, she has added.

In the video with Djumaev recorded at the protest rally, his friend says that Djumaev went out on the street not so much for Navalny as for the changes in the situation in the country.
