Rights defenders demand from Georgian authorities to protect women's rights

In Georgia, women's rights are systematically violated, the human rights defenders from the NGO "Young Lawyers' Association" have noted, referring to cases of domestic violence, sexual harassment, early and forced marriages, and forced abortion.

On March 8, the above NGO proposed to the Georgian Parliament to amend the definition of sexual crimes in accordance with the international human rights standards.

According to the NGO, in the first nine months of 2020, 19 women were killed by family members or former partners in Georgia. Also, 20 assassination attempts were recorded.

Besides, in January 2021, the number of cases of sexual violence increased by 5% as compared to the same last year's period.

Human rights defenders have also suggested launching vocational training programmes for women.
