Armenian Constitutional Court finds charge against Kocharyan unconstitutional
The article of the Criminal Code of Armenia on attempting to overthrow the constitutional order contradicts two articles of the basic law of Armenia, the Constitutional Court points out. The Court’s decision comes into force from the moment it is pronounced, and the criminal proceedings against Robert Kocharyan under the above-mentioned article should be stopped, advocates of the second President of Armenia claim.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Robert Kocharyan is charged in a case on dispersing a rally in Yerevan on March 1-2, 2008, during which 10 people were killed. Robert Kocharyan claimed that the special services received information about the protesters having arms. The second President of Armenia is also accused of money laundering, fraud, and receiving a large bribe.
The Constitutional Court of Armenia has recognized the charge against Robert Kocharyan under the article on attempting to overthrow the constitutional order as contradicting the country's basic law.
Robert Kocharyan notes he spent a significant period of time in custody because of the charge under the above-mentioned article.
