Elchin Mamed's mother claims deterioration of his health in colony

The health condition of Elchin Mamed, an Azerbaijani journalist and human rights defender, has deteriorated in the colony due to absence of medical treatment, his mother has stated. The issue of Mamed's transfer to the prison hospital is being solved, human rights defenders have informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 16, 2020, the court sentenced Elchin Mamed to four years in prison within the case of theft and illegal weapon possession. He refused to plead guilty. In late March, human rights defenders appealed to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Justice (MoJ) with a request to transfer Mamed to a medical institution of the Penitentiary Service because of his health problems.

On June 9, the "Turan" News Agency reported with reference to Rakhil Mamedova, Elchin Mamed's mother, that the health of her son kept in Colony No. 16 in Azerbaijan had sharply deteriorated. The woman said that on Sunday evening Elchin lost consciousness because of absence of due medical care.

The Agency has also reported that on June 9, Saadat Bananurly, a member of the Monitoring Group of Azerbaijani Human Rights Organizations, contacted Colony No. 16. According to her story, Elchin Mamed is in the medical unit and his condition has normalized. The issue of transferring him to the medical institution of the Penitentiary Service is being considered, the rights defender has added.
