Relatives of convicted opponents of quarantine in North Ossetia appeal to President Putin for amnesty
Relatives appealed to the Russian President with a request to pardon 38 arrested and convicted participants of protests against the self-isolation regime in Vladikavkaz in April 2020.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on July 26, in Rostov-on-Don, a court sentenced five participants of the protest action against the self-isolation regime, which took place in Vladikavkaz in April 2020, to 5-5.5 years of imprisonment. On July 28, the court sentenced five other protesters to imprisonment from 4 years and 9 months to 6 years and 6 months.
On April 20, 2020, in Vladikavkaz, the police dispersed an action held by opponents of the self-isolation regime, who demanded the resignation of the North-Ossetian government. According to the investigators’ information, 13 law enforcers were injured during the spontaneous rally. Vadim Cheldiev, whom the investigators consider an initiator of the rally, was added to the list of extremists.
The relatives of the participants of the protest action in Vladikavkaz appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request to pardon the convicts and defendants kept at a SIZO (pre-trial prison).
“Please ... issue a bill on amnesty for 38 residents of Ossetia who have been kept in the SIZO in Rostov-on-Don for about a year and a half,” reads the text of the appeal cited by the “Kavkaz.Realii”* on September 14.
The protestors’ relatives noted that some of the participants of the protest action have been sentenced to 4.9-6.6 years of imprisonment, while the rest are waiting for a court’s decision. “Considering the period of time they have already served, we ask you to show humanity to our children, who were confused and showed excessive emotionality in that situation,” the appeal says.
