Georgia: oppositionist treats his son's detention for beating up transgender as political
Levan Bidzinashvili, a Georgian oppositionist and candidate for Mayor of the city of Gori from the "United National Movement" (UNM) Party, has stressed a political component in the detention of his son for attacking a transgender woman in Tbilisi.
On September 28, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported on the detention in Tbilisi of a suspect of attacking a transgender woman. The detainee is charged with a violence article and faces up to a year in prison.
The detainee is a son of Levan Bidzinashvili, a UNM member, the "Rustavi-2" TV Channel has reported on its website today, specifying that Levan Bidzinashvili is a candidate for Mayor of Gori from the oppositional UNM Party.
"A friend of my son told me that unidentified people drove up in a police car, asked his son's name and drove him away to some unknown place. Most likely this case is related to politics; and what else could it be?" the "Formula" TV Channel quoted Bidzinashvili's words on its website in the evening on September 28.
