Words of Chechen official Umarov in defence of apologies spark social network users' criticism

The practice of public apologies should be spread everywhere; one's willingness to publicly repent is evidence of a person's decency, Djambulat Umarov, a Vice-Premier of Chechnya, has stated. In their turn, Instagram users have objected that forced public apologies are not always sincere.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that a new round of public apologies occurred this summer, after Instagram users launched a flash mob mentioning Ramzan Kadyrov. The reason for the flash mob was Kadyrov's threat to execute the social network user for addressing him with the words "you are not a human being, you are just a shaitan."

"Apologizing is not a shame, it's an admission of one's guilt and repentance – a proof of real humanity," Mr Umarov said on air of the "Moscow Speaking" Radio Station.

Commentators have emphasized the difference between sincere remorse and a forced public apology. However, some users have supported the Vice-Premier's position.
