ECtHR demands to provide adequate medical care to Azerbaijani diplomat Gasanov
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has decided to take interim measures in relation to Eldar Gasanov, a former Azerbaijani Prosecutor General and Ambassador to Serbia, in connection with his state of health. His defence claims it necessary to urgently hospitalize him.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Gasanov faces up to 10 years in prison. His defence asked to release him because of deterioration of his health condition, but the prosecutor's office has stated that the defendant has no diseases incompatible with the arrest.
In 2001-2013, Gasanov was the Azerbaijani Ambassador to Romania and, in 2013-2020 – to Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. He was detained on August 13, 2020, on charges of misuse of state budget funds and abuse of powers. Gasanov declared his innocence; and human rights defenders linked the persecution of the former ambassador to his political ambitions.
Earlier, Gasanov told the court about the deterioration of his health condition.
