Moscow appoints special envoy for normalizing Armenian-Azerbaijani relations

Russia has appointed a special representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to promote the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman of the Russian MFA, stated in response to a media question about the preparation of an Azerbaijani-Armenian peace agreement, the Russian MFA informed on April 14 on its website.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 6, a meeting of the Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliev, with the Armenian Premier, Nikol Pashinyan, took place in Brussels. As a result of the talks, both parties agreed to set up, by the end of April, a bilateral commission for delimitation of mutual borders and starting drafting a peace agreement.

Igor Khovaev, the Ambassador-at-Large will continue his work in a new capacity, namely, as a special representative of the Russian Foreign Minister with the mission to promote the normalization of Azerbaijani-Armenian relations, Ms Zakharova has stated.

The MFA special representative will focus on drafting a peace treaty of the two countries. "We hope that Igor Khovaev's efforts will be supported by our allies and partners in Baku and Yerevan. We are also open for constructive interaction with other interested actors," Maria Zakharova has added.
