Resident of Dagestan achieves compensation for violence at SIZO
The Kirovsky Court of Makhachkala has reduced by 20 times the amount of compensation for the moral harm claimed by Magomed Piraev, who complained of beating and illegal placement into the dungeon (punishment cell) for 15 days at the Makhachkala SIZO (pre-trial prison). Instead of the claimed 500,000, he was awarded 25,000 roubles.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Magomed Piraev was one of the figurants in the case of Askhabali Zairbekov, the head of the Kizilyurt ROVD (District Interior Division) of Dagestan. The figurants were accused of robbery, hostage-taking, theft and illegal arms dealing. In September 2016, the court acquitted Zairbekov, but sentenced three other defendants to long prison terms. Magomed Piraev was sentenced to 15 years in a high security colony.
Magomed Piraev demanded compensation for the beating and illegal placement into the dungeon for 15 days when at the Makhachkala SIZO. The court recognized his right to compensation, but significantly reduced the amount thereof – instead of the claimed 500,000, he was awarded 25,000 roubles, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* has reported today.
Mr Piraev has claimed that at the SIZO he was subjected to ill-treatment and was beaten with a rubber stick on the buttocks, while violations of the SIZO regime were imputed to him "unfoundedly", "on the basis of an illegal and far-fetched pretext."
