Chechen historian, Mairbek Vachagaev*, put on list of foreign agents
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) of Russia has entered Mairbek Vachagaev*, a Chechen historian and journalist, into the register of foreign agents.
The MoJ's website notes that Vachagaev* "took part in the creation and spread of foreign agents' messages and materials among an unlimited circle of people," and also "carried out activities aimed at forming anti-Russian views." It is also indicated that Vachagaev* "lives outside the Russian Federation."
Mairbek Vachagaev* is a Candidate of Historical Sciences, author of books and articles about the Caucasian War, history of Chechnya and Islam. In 1998 he was the press secretary of Aslan Maskhadov; in 1999, he was arrested on charges of illegal possession of weapons; and in 2000, he was amnestied. After that, he left Russia. Since 2014, he has been a co-editor of the historical and political magazine "Caucasus Survey", published in the Netherlands, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project has reported.
