Court refused to cancel criminal prosecution of journalist Kevorkova

The Basmanny Court of Moscow has refused to cancel the decision to initiate a criminal case against Nadezhda Kevorkova, which her defence had appealed against due to its groundlessness and a number of violations.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 7, 2024, the Basmanny Court ruled to arrest Nadezhda Kevorkova, 65 (included into the list of terrorists and extremists), accused of justifying terrorism. On August 2, her arrest was extended by two months.

The defence demanded that the decision to initiate a criminal case be cancelled, citing a number of significant violations. The ruling gives no grounds for initiating a case, Kaloi Akhilgov, an advocate, has explained.

Nadezhda Kevorkova is accused of justifying terrorism for her posts placed in her Telegram channel. The reason was in a repost of a text from 2010 by Orkhan Djemal, a journalist, about the attack on Nalchik and a publication about the Taliban* movement. In his article, Djemal spoke about the authorities' blunders that had led to Muslims' discontent. Djemal's text had not earlier been found illegal; and the arguments that the post in the Kevorkova's Telegram channel was accessible to a wide audience are not true, the advocate has emphasized.

*By the Russian Supreme Court the movement has been recognized to be a terrorist organization and banned in Russia.
