Journalist Nadezhda Kevorkova’s case transferred to court
The Second Western District Military Court will consider the case against journalist Nadezhda Kevorkova on the justification of terrorism.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on December 3, 2024, it became known that the case against Nadezhda Kevorkova was returned to the investigation to eliminate inaccuracies in the charges. The Moscow City Prosecutor’s Office approved the indictment. On February 19, the Moscow City Court dismissed the complaint to extend the arrest of the journalist.
Nadezhda Kevorkova has been accused of justifying terrorism because of her two posts on her Telegram channel: a repost of a 2010 text by journalist Orkhan Djemal about the attack on Nalchik and a post about the “Taliban” movement*. In the article, Orkhan Djemal described his acquaintance with Anzor Astemirov and discussed the government’s miscalculations that led to discontent of Muslims.
The text prepared by Orkhan Djemal was not recognized as illegal, and the public prosecutors’ arguments that the entry posted on the Nadezhda Kevorkova’s Telegram channel was accessible to a wide audience do not correspondent to the actual facts, the journalist’s defence states. The Nadezhda Kevorkova’s posts about the events in Nalchik in 2005 concerned the torture that detainees were subjected to and irritated the law enforcement bodies, while the journalist “did not support terrorism in any form,” claimed journalist Maxim Shevchenko, a former husband of Nadezhda Kevorkova.
Earlier, Nadezhda Kevorkova had been critical with regard to the activities of the law enforcement bodies in Northern Caucasus in general and in Kabardino-Balkaria in particular.
*The “Taliban” movement has been recognized by the Supreme Court (SC) of the Russian Federation as a terrorist organization, and its activities are banned in Russia.
