European Union calls Russia to give up supporting Abkhazia and South Ossetia

The European Union expresses serious concern because of Russia's intention to launch legal relations with non-recognized Republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and calls Moscow not to undertake any steps in this direction. This is the topic of the statement of Slovenia, which is currently presiding in the EU.

"The European Union reiterates its firm adherence to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders, as it has been re-confirmed by Resolution 1808 of the UN Security Council of April 15, 2008," runs the EU's document. It also emphasizes that "the Russia's decision endangers the observance of these principles."

Besides, in the opinion of the EU chair-country, the Russia's decision "creates a threat of further tension build-up and undermines the international peaceful efforts, in which Russia is also a party," the RIA "Novosti" reports.
