Belarus MPs call to recognize Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's independence

Sergey Gaidukevich, a deputy of the Belarusian Parliament and the leader of the Liberal-Democratic Party of Belarus, has stated that Belarus should follow Russia and recognize Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's independence, as the "Interfax" Agency reports.

Apart from the LDPB leader, in Belarus, Russia's position on Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's independence was supported by other pro-governmental deputies.

For example, Sergey Kostyan, deputy chairman of the commission for international matters and CIS relations under the Belarusian government, said in his interview to the BelaPan Agency: "I think that signing by Russian President Dmitri Medvedev of his decrees on recognition of South Ossetia's and Abkhazia's independence is a very correct and timely decision."

However, the MFA of Belarus has not yet made any comments on Russia's decision to recognize Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's independence.

Let us note here that in Armenia, where the leaders have not yet expressed their attitude to the issue of recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, appeals are heard to follow the lead of their ally and neighbour. Thus, the Youth Party of Armenia (YPA) has made a decision to address the National Assembly of the country with an offer to put the issue of recognition of South Ossetia's and Abkhazia's independence on the agenda. The Communist Party of Armenia has also supported the Russia's decision on Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Ruben Tovmasyan, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia, made this statement to the "News-Armenia" Agency; he also strongly criticized the position of the West on this issue.
