Stavropol Territory commemorates victims of 2001 terror act in Minvody
Today, the city of Mineralnye Vody (Minvody), Stavropol Territory, has hosted mourning events to commemorate the victims of the terror act committed on March 24, 2001. On that day, three explosions in Stavropol Territory and Karachaevo-Circassia killed 26 persons and wounded over 150.
Today at midday, in the place of one of the explosions, in the square near the central city marketplace of Minvody, where a monument to the victims was erected, a rally took place with participation of victims' relatives and friends, eyewitnesses of the tragedy, officials from the city and regional administration, members of public organizations and religious leaders, schoolboys and students, representatives of political parties.
"Because of bad weather (it is raining since morning in Minvody, - note of the "Caucasian Knot"), it was decided not to hold the mourning rally in the place of the tragedy, people only laid wreaths and flowers to the monument," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed at the department of education and culture of the Minvody administration.
Let us remind you that on March 24, 2001, almost at the same time three cars stuffed with explosives were blown up at the entrance on the central marketplace in Minvody, at the REO GAI in Essentuki, Stavropol Territory, and at the militia station Adyg-Khabl aul, Karachaevo-Circassia.
As a result of operative-search actions, certain Arasula Khubiev was detained when driving a car stuffed with explosives in Adyg-Khabl aul of Karachaevo-Circassia. Later, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment. And in April 2005 the Stavropol Territorial Court sentenced Alim Batchaev, a resident of Karachaevo-Circassia, to 18 years of maximum security colony for complicity in committing the terror act.
