Two residents of Chechnya charged with disturbances in Kondopoga

The Karelia prosecutor's office has accused of murder two residents of Chechnya who took part in a mass fight in the city of Kondopoga which resulted in ethnic-based disturbances in the city at the beginning of September. Piotr Klemeshov, deputy prosecutor of Karelia, stated during his meeting with the leadership of Kondopoga on December 28,  that investigation maintains that, during the mass fight near the "Chaika" restaurant, they had killed two residents of Kondopoga. The accused are under arrest now.

Additionally, four more Chechens have been arrested on the suspicion of involvement in the mass fight. The "Novosti" Russian news agency, reports that, according to Klemeshov, they may be charged on Friday.

For reference, the disturbances in Kondopoga, Republic of Karelia, were caused by a mass fight between local residents and immigrants from the Caucasus, during which two people were killed. As a result of the disturbances, virtually all representatives of national minorities, including the Chechen diaspora, had to leave Kondopoga.
