Tortured Dagestan resident adjudges 5 million roubles from Russia

Khanali Umakhanov, formerly accused of organizing the terror act in Kaspijsk (Dagestan) on May 9, 2002, has managed to adjudge five millions roubles from the government of Russia. Today, the Sovietskiy Court of Makhachkala has satisfied its claims on compensation of moral damage caused by his illegal bringing to criminal liability.

Mr Umakhanov was detained in Moscow in summer of 2002 at an attempt of a pocket-picking. Apart from the Kaspijsk terror act, he was incriminated several more Articles of the Criminal Code. Four years later, after several criminal trials, the Supreme Court acquitted him on all the indictment points.

His statement of claim runs: "For two days I was kept at the temporary isolation facility of the Leninskiy ROVD (District Militia Unit). Then, they removed me to the building of 'Division 6' and started torturing severely. It lasted for about 6-7 days, then, they brought me to some ROVD located in the mountain area. I was exposed to severe tortures and repeatedly lost my consciousness, and as a result I have lost my mind."

"Should the court or respondent find this sum excessive, let them think whether they'd agree to go through what Umakhanov had for 5 million roubles," Umakhanov's advocate said in the debates, as quoted by Gazeta.ru.
