Opposition reaches agreement with the authorities of Georgia

As a result of the today's four-hour-long meeting of representatives of the opposition and the authorities of Georgia, an agreement was reached on the basic demands of the opposition related to staffing of the Public Television and release from custody of political prisoners.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that two unsettled points concerning constitutional changes remain: the term of office of the Parliament and regional elections.

Levan Gachechiladze, leader of the United Opposition, has informed that 27 candidates for the Board of Guardians were nominated. Besides, an agreement was reached on political prisoners.

"Three persons from the list that we have lodged will be soon released, or have already been released," Mr Gachechiladze has asserted.

"We have managed to agree on such candidates for the Board of Guardians, who will be least politicized and not associated with any political forces, or politically engaged," the politician has emphasized in his conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

An agreement has been reached on the constitutional reduction of the Parliament electoral barrier from 7 to 5 percent and official appointment of parliamentary elections for this spring.

We remind you that in the evening of February 25 representatives of the authorities and opposition of Georgia reached agreement on release of four persons, arrested during dispersal of the rally on November 7 in Tbilisi.
