Churkin: western media give wrong coverage of Russia-Georgia conflict

Vitaly Churkin, Russia's permanent representative at the United Nations, has expressed regret in the context of the "propaganda campaign" opened in western media on the situation in the Caucasus. Especially, Mr Churkin disliked the way the events around the city of Gori were covered.

Speaking in the evening on Thursday, August 14, to journalists at the UN main office, he emphasized that many journalists were using facts in their publications, which were far from reality. As an example, he referenced publications in American The Washington Post and British The Financial Times.

Mr Churkin has stated that if journalists had wished to cover the events objectively, they should have come to the scene, where the events had really happened. As he said, "it's impossible to write about the city of Gori that "it lies in ruins" because there are no ruins there." According to the permanent representative, Gori is supplied with electricity and water, despite it lacks any representatives of the city administration.

Besides, Vitaly Churkin has noted that "Russian militaries are guarding a huge warehouse with ammunition and equipment left near Gori. Such stocks cannot be left without attention, it is unsafe for the peaceful population," the ITAR-TASS reports.
