West and Russia approve change of power in Armenia

Today, the US Ambassador to Armenia has praised both actions of supporters of the opposition and of resigned Serzh Sargsyan. The European Union has expressed its readiness to help strengthen democracy in the country, while the press secretary of the Russian President stated the successful outcome of the protests in Armenia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 23, Serzh Sargsyan, a former President, who had been elected by the MPs to the post of Prime Minister only six days before, announced his resignation. He explained that he was fulfilling the opposition's demand.

Today, Richard Mills, US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Armenia, has stated supporters of Pashinyan and the people of Armenia deserve praise for having expressed their protest in a legitimate way.

The US Ambassador has also praised the decision of Serzh Sargsyan to resign and explained that the head of the state "showed himself as a leader, heard the voice of the people of Armenia and made a difficult decision for himself," the "NEWS.am" reports.

Today, Ambassador Piotr Świtalski, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Armenia, has stated that the European Union will assist Armenia in strengthening democracy. According to him, the events in Armenia showed that the values of democracy are important for citizens of the country.

In turn, the Kremlin hopes that the order will remain in Armenia, said Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President. "Now we see let's say that the situation does not go along the path of destabilization, and that is satisfying. Yesterday, we have already said everything that is happening in Yerevan is the internal affair of our Armenian friends, partners and allies," the RBC quotes today Dmitry Peskov as responding to the question of how the Kremlin reacted to the resignation of Serzh Sargsyan.
