Dagestani lawyer Marat Ismailov challenges compensation sum for his detention
The court has recovered 20,000 roubles from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) as compensation for Marat Ismailov, a lawyer from Dagestan, who was detained while passing by a picket in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev. Ismailov, who had claimed 40,000 roubles, filed a complaint with the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 26, 2022, the court ordered a Makhachkala policeman to make a written apology to Ismailov, who was detained while passing by a picket in support of the journalist, Abdulmumin Gadjiev.
Marat Ismailov is a well-known human rights defender and lawyer in Dagestan; he would have achieved such a decision under any circumstances, Magomed Magomedov, a deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik" outlet, believes.
He has also noted that there are many cases where residents of Dagestan are persecuted for taking part in public actions.
Idris Yusupov, a journalist, believes that Ismailov was able to achieve such a court ruling because he has experience in protecting his rights. He is known in the republic for filing complaints against policemen's illegal actions.
