KChR residents commemorate deportation victims

On the 80th anniversary of Karachays' deportation, religious ceremonies were held in the central mosque of Karachaevsk in memory of the victims of the tragic events of 1943.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 2, 2022, on the Remembrance Day of Deportation Victims, in the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR), participants in the mourning events laid flowers at the memorials. Then, even 79 years after the deportation start, the rehabilitation of their repressed fellow countrymen has not been fully completed, social network users noted.

In the USSR, the deportation of Karachays was launched on November 2, 1943. In total, during the pre-war and war years, 79,000 persons of Karachay nationality were deported. Most of those repressed – over 43,000, including 22,000 children – died on the road and in resettlement places. In the today's KChR, November 2 is marked as the Deportation Day of Karachays; and May 3 is marked as the Revival Day of the Karachay People.

Religious ceremonies were held in the central mosque in the city of Karachaevsk in memory of deportation victims, Marat Urusov, the Mayor of the Karachaevsk Urban District.

"There is no family untouched by this terrible tragedy. And today, 80 years later, we remember and feel sorrow for those who were subjected to cruel injustice and fell victim to repression," the Mayor wrote in his Telegram channel.

Rashid Temrezov, the head of KChR, has noted that during the deportation, many Karachays fought at the fronts of the Great Patriotic War (World War II).

The rehabilitation of Karachays is not over, since they have failed to restore their autonomy, says Mukhammad Karachay, an activist, believes.

Let us recall that in September this year, activists, scientists and politicians in Northern Caucasus criticized a new school textbook on Russia's History, in which the deportation of Caucasian nations was explained by their collaboration with fascists. On October 24, it became known that the text of the new textbook had been corrected.
