In Armenia, police detain ten oppositionists

Today, at about 6 p.m. local time, in Yerevan, a clash burst out between policemen of the patrol-sentry unit and participants of the so-called "political walks" in the Northern Avenue of the Armenian capital.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that policemen took away 10 persons to the police station of community Kentron, including Levon Zurabyan, coordinator of the central office of the Armenian National Congress (ANC).

According to the statement of the ANC's press service, at about 5 p.m. policemen blocked the access to the Northern Avenue, where traditional "political walks" are held - opposition members and supporters, and journalists rally together.

When people tried to get to the Northern Avenue, policemen, as the press service gives it, detained several women and took them away in unknown direction. Levon Zurabyan, coordinator of the ANC's central office, tried to interfere; however, he was also seized and brought to the police station. Besides, David Dzhalalyan, a journalist of the Internet edition "А1+", was severely beaten and is now in hospital, as sources at the ANC have noted.

According to the information that the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent could get from Arman Musinyan, press secretary of the ANC, as of 9 p.m. local time, all the arrested persons were still at the police station. As he assured, all of them would be released quite shortly.
