Investigation on the case of Kondopoga militiamen is over

The Investigatory Department at the Prosecutor's Office of Karelia has finished the investigation of criminal cases opened against high-ranking employees of militia accused of negligence in connection with disorders in Kondopoga in September 2006.

The RIA "Novosti" reports that Oleg Dupak, Public Prosecutor of the Republic, has declared to journalists that cases were initiated against Militia Colonel Victor Vysokikh, Deputy Commander of the Militia of Public Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Karelia, and Militia Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Chechelnitskiy, former head of the Kondopoga GOVD (City Militia Unit).

The militiamen were presented charges under Part 1, Articles 293 of the Criminal Code (negligence), which stipulates punishment in the form of a fine, mandatory public works from 120 to 180 hours, or corrective works for the term of from six to twelve months. Now, they are under the recognizance not to leave. Colonel Vysokikh is accused of having failed to ban the meeting on September 2 near the city mini-market and at the building of the Administration of the Kondopoga District. Besides, under the version of investigation, he had admitted pogroms of the trading objects belonging to natives from the Caucasus. Alexander Chechelnitskiy, former head of the Kondopoga GOVD, is accused of a failure to stop mass riots.
